Lyric Writing & Personal Storytelling

Writing song lyrics can provide a creative and engaging way for participants to express ideas, tell stories, and explore what matters most to them. Facility staff guide participants through the activity, encouraging discussion, reflection, and creativity in ways that best support each individual's needs, interests, and program goals.

Music Moves Us provides the musical resources and creative support for a variety of lyric-writing activities. Facility staff may choose to incorporate lyric prompts, original lyric writing, rewriting the words to familiar songs, or collaborative songwriting based on the interests, abilities, and goals of their participants.

As participants write and share their lyrics, facility staff may gain valuable insight into the experiences, interests, perspectives, strengths, and aspirations participants choose to express. These moments can strengthen rapport, encourage meaningful conversation, and support treatment, educational, social, or recreational goals. The activity encourages creativity, supports self-expression, and gives every participant an opportunity to be heard.
